Hide and Seek

"You will have times of spiritual dryness. It is part of the Lord's way." Guyon

God is a paradox. Lion and lamb. Servant and King. Sacrifice and Saviour.

He also seems contradictory. He promises to never leave or forsake yet, at times, He hides Himself.

Why?

"He hides Himself for a purpose. His purpose is to rouse you from spiritual laziness.....and cause you to pursue Him."

Just as we desire to be pursued, so does God. He longs to fully give Himself to the soul which earnestly seeks Him.

You don't have to read too far into the Psalms to understand why God called David ' a man after my heart'. David experienced the most intimate relationship with God and the most wretched aloneness. But he never stopped seeking God.

How often in the day do you consciously, intentionally, and purposefully acknowledge God, talk to Him, or just be with Him?

In a monastery life revolves around a set of spiritual disciplines. Chimes, or bells, herald the followers to perform certain prayers or rituals. Everyone in the community, no matter if they are studying in the library, or weeding the garden, stop and perform their spiritual duty.

Might this be a practice to add to your day? A simple notification reminding you to turn to God. Especially in times when God seems distant.

"The fact you will have spiritual dry spells in not the issue. The important question is, what you will do? At this point you must learn something about your natural tendencies."

Some will try to work their way back to God, even using spiritual disciplines. Others will just ignore God altogether and slowly sink into apathy. Instead, why not be like the five wise virgins Jesus talked about in Matthew 25, who kept their lamps lit and made sure they had enough oil until the Bridegroom returned?

How do you keep the oil full?

  • Read the Bible

  • Pray

  • Worship

  • Wait

But most of all have faith. God is true to His word. He never truly leaves us or forsakes us.

However, He may be playing Hide and Seek.
