"If your body were dead, you would have no feeling. It would be disconnected from the soul." Guyon
Have you ever gone on a diet? Have you ever made yourself wait, or had a parent make you wait, for a treat?
Have you ever denied your body's desire? Of course you have. I'm sure you experienced feelings over that.
Impatience.
Frustration.
Maybe even anger.
Isn't that how we learn self-control? Aren't we supposed to "discipline the body and make it a slave" as Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 9:27?
Of course we need to develop self control, but what Guyon is teaching here is that if you attach the soul more to the spirit and less to the body, self control is easy. Wrong desires, deflections and self defence die as the power of the body's demands die.
So how do you detach the soul from the demands of the body and attach it to the Spirit?
Spend time with God. Practice turning to Him who dwells within. Possess a Present God who loves you. Be filled with the Spirit that raised Christ Jesus. "Be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man." (Eph 3:16 NASB)
Our main concern is dwelling continually with God. The soul will align with the Spirit naturally. And we will see the wrong desires of the body finally die.
