Be Still, My Soul

"As the Lord flows out of your spirit into your soul, cease all activity." Guyon

Instructions on how to be still are clear, simple even, however stilling the soul is not easy.

Imagine a newborn baby.

Sleeping, content.

But then she stirs. First one limb, then another.

Eyes open, face contorts from purest peace to upset.

Crying begins, first as a wimpier, and if not succoured, then developes into a wail.

The babe is hungry.

The mother lifts the baby to her.

Holding and cooing.

But this cannot calm the hungry child.

Mom offers the breast.

Tiny lips and tongue latch on, fervently sucking.

The milk flows.

Babe stops moving the lips and just drinks.

Now imagine you coming to God.

You need something.

You run to God.

You feel His welcome, even His comfort.

You conclude it enough.

You push off and leave without receiving food for your soul.

You know He loves you. You felt the embrace.

You just didn't know you were hungry.

You didn't wait.

You had other things to do.

What can you do to be more like the suckling babe?

  1. Move your lips. Pray. Worship. Adore

  2. Navigate from a thankful heart

  3. As you sense the Lord, cease praying

  4. Breath in deeply and receive His love

  5. When you feel Him less, move your lips again

  6. Meditate on His love, goodness, and grace

  7. Repeat 4-6

Be still upon your bed and search your heart before him. Pause in his presence Psalm 4:4

I am standing in absolute stillness, silent before the one I love, waiting as long as it takes for him to rescue me. Only God is my Savior, and he will not fail me. Psalm 62:5
