"Why am I afraid to break out of my chains?" Fenelon
Everything about the Kingdom of Heaven is upside down and backwards. If you want to lead, serve. If you want to get ahead, submit to being last. If you want to be free, surrender.
Serve. Submit. Surrender.
Not very sexy 21st Century speak.
It wasn't very well received in the 1st Century either.
Fenelon asks the quoted question in a prayer. It begins with a desire to give himself to God. It ends with Fenelon surrendering his heart, his brokenness, his life, to God alone. He made the leap from earthly reasoning to a Kingdom mindset.
So why am I afraid to break out of my chains?
Mostly because they're familiar. Also because to fully surrender my life, my will, and my future, to a God of spirit sounds crazy. But is it?
So far in this 100 Days in the Secret Place journey there's been a lot of teaching on being still, quiet and hearing God's voice. If we claim to hear God's voice then we're already judged Crazy by the world.
So why not go farther? Why not surrender everything and gain God? He is Living Water. He is the Bread of Life. He supplies everything we need. Holy Spirit was left to teach, guide and comfort. The same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us.
So why, like a trained elephant, do we look at the gossamer chain of regret, sin, or self-loathing wrapped around our ankles and give in?
"Why should I fear to give You everything and draw close to You?" Fenelon asks.
Do we really want to delegate our spiritual teaching to a Moses? Do we really want to stay in the valley partying when God has invited us into His very presence?
We should be more afraid of the lure of stepping back, allowing others to tell us what God wants for us, and to be left in the world rather than surrendering our lives to the King of Kings.
Yes, we've got stuff hidden in the depths of our soul. Yes, God is perfect Light and He knows all.
But remember. He is also Love.
He adopted you into His Family. He has given you His Righteousness.
Say it. Say it out loud.
I am a Miracle of Grace.
I am free from the chains of sin and death.
I am a much-love child of the King.
Now go live like it.
