"Each time God's light focuses on your life, all you can do is turn very simply to Him." Guyon
Lasers have the ability to cut through steel. The focused beam of light is sharper than a knife, and highly accurate. Lasers are also used by surgeons. The power of light harnessed for the industrial, medical, and creative purposes of man.
God is not only the source of light, He is Light. To desire an intimate relationship with Him demands facing, and being examined by, that Light.
The thought of exposure is enough to continue living in the shadows. After all, it is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
But why is it terrifying?
Because God is the Judge. His laser light seeks out and exposes every sin, wrong attitude, lie, unforgivingness, and root of bitterness. Nothing is hidden from His eye. Yet He says, "Fear not!"
In the New American Standard Bible the phrase, fear not, or do not be afraid, is used over 140 times. It seems fear of God is part of the human condition.
It all began in the Garden of Eden. Sin exposed Adam and Eve's nakedness to their own eye. They hid. God came for the evening conversation. They didn't show up. He called out, "Where are you?"
Adam answered, "I heard you coming so I hid myself because I'm naked and afraid." Then God asked the question, "Who told you that you were naked?"
God didn't need to ask them why they were afraid. He knew they were afraid because of their nakedness. Nothing was hidden from God's eyes. Their soul was laid bare before Him every day as they communed together. But something had changed.
Sin had given Adam and Eve a different perspective.
God was God; they were not.
God was perfect; they were not.
God was good; they were not.
So they hid. So they were afraid. So we keep hiding.
Then Jesus came. Everything changed as soon as He was born .
The angel proclaimed:
"Fear not! I bring you Good News! Peace has come to Earth and God is well pleased with man!"
But Jesus hadn't done anything yet. He was a helpless baby born into poverty. Why was God all of a sudden well pleased with man?
Because that is His heart. The heart that wishes no one to perish. The heart that created man to commune with. The heart that met Adam and Eve in the garden just to be with.
His heart is still searching those who dare come. Even in our sin, our doubts, our brokenness and our fear.
He waits.
Not to judge, but to do laser surgery, if we yield. To cut away the stony parts and reveal the much-loved child hidden within.
