"We simply shall not find our God without." Molinos
Molinos, like Fenelon and Guyon, preaches the same message. All exterior religious activity is fine but it's not the highest goal. A deep abiding awareness for the presence of God within, is.
It's fairly easy to put on religion: prayer, Bible reading, attending corporate worship services, singing the latest Christian hit. These are all normal behaviour and widely accepted as a display of Christian conformity and maturity. Even the more extravagant displays of devotion, raising the hands, dancing, flagging, loudly proclaiming your love for God, or laying prostrate at the altar, can become learned behaviour.
I don't mean to imply people aren't sincere in their devotion, chosen display, or practice of it. It's just that once you've tasted uninterrupted communion with God, abiding peace and complete acceptance in His presence, your need for busyness and posturing evaporates. You just want Him.
But putting on Christ is not easy. It may have something to do with the cross He fits you with. Death to self is messy, against your nature, and a lifelong pursuit. But once you latch on to the truth that you are the Holy Habitation of God Himself, and you catch a whiff of the fragrance of Heaven, you are spoiled for religious activity. It just doesn't matter anymore.
The thing that draws people to God is not the newest music or the most charismatic preacher. It's love. And yes, love in action. But love has to precede all action. And the love that changes lives is only found in Christ.
