"If you would have everything succeed, if you would have everything come to pass according to your own will, then you will never know the way of peace." Molinos

"Bitter, restless, disturbed", that is how Molinos describes a life seeking its own will. It's when we allow our will to be conformed to God's that peace is found. Not the outward peace of no conflict, but rather the inward peace of confronting the conflict and finding rest in Christ.

The funny thing is that the more you venture toward inward peace the more conflict you feel. But not with God. The conflict is with the world, with your loved ones, and with your self.

Desiring, pursuing and living the inward life is not normal. It doesn't fit society's idea of success. It doesn't even fit the organized churches views on how to be a Christian. For society, and for organized religion, it's too passive, quiet, and solitary. But, at the end, don't we all stand alone before God?

Molinos lists 5 road markers along the way to inward peace:

  1. loss of interest for intelligent prayer

  2. loss of interest for reading books

  3. growing knowledge of one's own self nature

  4. a rising disgust of one's sins

  5. insight into the deeper nature of God

The goal is for the seeker's will to be fully conformed to God's. And this knowledge can only be found through intimacy. An intimate relationship is one of acceptance, communion and love.

Complete acceptance is found in God. Perfect communion is spirit to spirit. Love is God's nature. Where these three live together is where Peace reigns.

Outward prayer has become cold

Study and reason, empty

I am my own worst company

So thin in love and patience

Nothing outside satisfies

I must turn inward

to find Peace

Jesus

Bread of Life

Living Water

My Righteousness

Divine Love

Only in You am I whole.
